(CNN) -- It was perhaps the strongest sign yet that the Internet was coming of age: it was implicated in a tragedy that shocked the nation. The 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult who took their own lives one year ago were professional Web page designers who used the Internet to attempt to win converts and spread their message.
The cult members committed suicide over a few days in late March 1997. They
died in shifts, with some
members helping others take a lethal cocktail of phenobarbital and vodka before downing their own doses of the fatal mixture.
Police found an eerily placid and orderly scene on March 26.
Heaven's Gate members believed that Hale-Bopp, an unusually bright comet, was the sign that they were supposed to shed their earthly bodies (or "containers") and join a spacecraft traveling behind the comet that would take them to a higher plane of existence.
For a time, the story became a national obsession as the media revealed details about the group. Among the most shocking: several of the cult's members, including leader Marshall Applewhite, had undergone voluntary castrations in the months leading up to the mass suicide.

Unfortunately these deceived individuals were also claiming to be contacted by alien beings. At their web site you can see a picture of how the alien deceivers may have appeared to them. The alien contact escalated into complete spiritual possession. This is a repeated theme in many alien belief systems.
Excerpt from the their book: Extraterrestrials Return with Final Warning The leaders of the heavens gate alien belief system say this in their book;
"In the early 1970's, two individuals (my task partner and myself) from the Evolutionary Level Above Human (the Kingdom of Heaven) incarnated into (moved into and took over) two human bodies that were in their forties. I moved into a male body, and my partner, who is an Older Member in the Level Above Human, took a female body. (We called these bodies "vehicles," for they simply served as physical vehicular tools for us to wear while on a task among humans. They had been tagged and set aside for our use since their birth.)
demonic entities posing as "wise", and "benign" alien beings did this, Tragically 39 poor lost souls were seduced. 39 people were Talked into killing themselves by this demonic alien deception !
One more fact here is that these individuals were practitioners of the; "New Age Religious Movement".
